Any way to fix this? Dan has a point, but I'm not clear about the problem. Certainly, if the .post file is included in restrict_post, then addresses in that list are allowed to post, and resulting messages will have the message_header and message_footer applied, as well as message_fronter, even though the posting user won't receive a copy of the post. Jørn, will you post the relevant sections of the_mailing_list.conf please? That is, restrict_post, message_headers, message_footer, and (in case that's what you meant) message_fronter. [message_headers adds *headers* to the message: things like X-version $VERSION or x-unzub information...the text at the top of each message is defined in message_fronter] ...and I usually put the_mailing_list file name in restrict_post, so all members of the list can post, and reserve the .post file for alternate addresses (like a work email address) or folks who are temporarily off-list, so they can post without receiving mail at the posting address. Hope that helps. I have a solution which allows you to define an HTML footer and it gets appended to all messages that contain HTML. The downside is that you need to maintain two footers, however I would assume the footer doesn't change that often. It hasn't been an issue for me. The only real problem is that I have not taken the time to strip these alterations out of my extremely customized majordomo/resend scripts. I will try to pull the pertinent pieces of code out of mine so that everyone in this community can take advantage of it. Believe me, you don't want everything. :-) Thanks, Rob ------------------------------------------------------ Owner, Rochester Classifieds Online http://RochesterClassifiedsOnline.biz ------------------------------------------------------ >>This seems to have been a problem for a long time and is not related to .post only, but to ALL posters. >>With nearly all senders embellishing their email, the footer is nearly useless. >>Is there any fix to this to have a reliable footer? I used to think HTML was problem too, but not quite actually, merely related, (could prove that by eg sending just a .jpg) It's a problem of MIME enclosures. Majordomo is clueless about MIME, Doesnt recognise poster has sent a MIME mail, majordomo just appends footer as usual, but Majordomo does Not append another MIME enclosure delimeter. (I think terminal delimeter is slightly different to intermediate too, so needs stripping & re-appending). Mail reader tools (like EXMH 2.7.2 on FreeBSD & readers on Microsoft, do understand MIME, but fail to display the final MIME enclosure (the footer) if there is no terminating MIME enclosure delimeter. ( I've succesfully tried manually editing in another MIME delimeter & then EXMH displays footer, but problem is the delimeter uses a per mail dependent string ). The real solution would be to extend majordomo to be MIME aware - More modern mail list tools such as Mailman are MIME aware. - Is Majordomo-2 MIME aware ? > From: "Robert Doty" > Yes. Hopefuly the Ascii footer doesnt get sent too on HTML postings, as double footers would confuse some people on some lists I run: ( Who are more than confused enough already), Some are total incompetents, can't understand ascii, or subscribe addresses etc, hence I'm constantly tempted to switch to Mailman, to avoid dealing with them ). -- Julian Stacey. The solution will result in the HTML footer within the HTML section and the Text footer within the Text portion of the message. OK. Here is a bulk of what you need. Hopefully you know perl and can make it all work for you. Feel free to bounce questions off of me. In config_parse.pl, you will need to make duplicates for all "message_footer" entries and rename them html_footer. Add these lines to your .config files: # html_footer [string_array] (undef) # Text to be appended at the end of all messages posted to the # list. The text is expanded before being used. The following # expansion tokens are defined: $LIST - the name of the current # list, $SENDER - the sender as taken from the from line, $VERSION, # the version of majordomo. If used in a digest, no expansion # tokens are provided html_footer << END

My hack simply places the _fronter and _footer *inside* the MIME enclosure when it exists. If there's no MIME enclosure, they go in the normal places. So there's still a single set of definitions in the list.config file I took that approach because I could see that the _fronter and _footer WERE being written to HTML-formatted mail, but outside the MIME enclosure of the HTML. Like Robert, I've not taken the time to document the patch, but will try to get to that in the near future. It may be nothing intrinsic to majordomo, just a more general problem of running lists, eg: I run some big lists (with many MickeySoft using incompetents, whose machines are doubtless regularly raped by viruses & plundered by spam list vendors) So my host name gets know to loads of spammers, & eventually mailq shows tons of mail to eg majordomo etc waiting to timeout on non return to [sometimes masqueraded etc] spammer sender. On a small machine if sendmail.cf is set to not run too many connections at once, mail can go out slowly. That could of course affect recipients on adjacent small lists as easily as recipients on big lists. Yes, always look for inspiration in log files. -- Julian Stacey. In one instance, it was yahoo's "greylisting" and in another it was a problem with the setup of my MTA. Majordomo (when working as it should) just re-sends messages to the addresses in the list's "list file." Once the messages have been handed off to the MTA, it is "done" Some hints/suggestions: What does the majordomo log report (if anything)? What MTA are you using? What do its logs report? Does email to those addresses using that MTA experience delays when sent "directly" (that is, not using majordomo)? The replacelist command is not part of the standard Majordomo distribution. It is a user-contributed patch that the system manager must apply to the software if they so choose.
