That sounds like a packet filter blocking the port, which would cause the
comman to hang. Esp. with the commands you list, since the onethat work
would use the ftp port (TCP 21) while ls and get would use the ftp data port
(TCP 20). Also, the data connection is done in reverse; server connecting
to client, unless you use passive ftp.
